Welcome back to our fourth installment of this series! In doing these interviews, my goal is that you can see yourself in these testimonies. Book·cation is for EVERYONE! 🙌 No matter how you choose to read, if you enjoy solitude versus more conversation, or you’re fast or slow reader, you are welcome at our reading retreat!

Emily and I met years ago through my friend Dani and she’s attended 2 book·cations! Emily is the definition of a mood mover (yes, I just coined that term) meaning she loves to move around to find different cozy spots to read. Whereas some people stayed in one location to read all weekend, you never knew where Emily would be. 😂 But wherever she was, I probably followed, LOL!

What is your favorite genre?

Honestly, I still love mystery and thriller, but romantasy is getting up there.

What is your favorite book you’ve read so far in 2025?

The Women’ by Kristin Hannah would be my favorite book if we’re talking books read in 2025.

Why did you come to book·cation?

Well, I literally love to read. I don’t get to do it as often because I have a 2 year old running around, so I was excited to just chill out and do nothing but read and being around people who want to do the same thing is really nice. I was kind of worried it was going to be more of a ‘everyone is going to chit chat the whole time’ but it wasn’t! There was an appropriate amount of chit chat and an appropriate amount of reading so I loved that.

What is your favorite book·cation memory?

I like being around people that have the same interest in reading in general as I do. It’s nice to literally just sit in silence, a comfortable silence, and just read even though you might be reading totally different things.

Describe book·cation in 5 words:

Get lost in books, fun!

What’s your unpopular book opinion?

I absolutely judge books by their covers. I love Freida McFadden so much, but her book covers are so ugly that I almost don’t want to read them, but then I do and I love her books.

Rachel is my friend Amanda’s little sister and we all went to college together so we’ve known each other for over 14 years. 😳 I’m so glad Rachel came to our Onyx Storm book·cation because we hadn’t had a chance to connect in a long time so thank you books (and Rebecca Yarros, I guess) for bringing us back together so we could both rag on Amanda and be sassy 💁‍♀️

What is your favorite genre?

I would say psychological thriller or mystery though I have been getting into fantasy lately.

What is your favorite book you’ve read in the past year?

It would probably be either ‘God of the Woods‘ by Liz Moore or ‘James‘ by Percival Everett.

Why did you come to book·cation?

My sister Amanda went to previous ones and never stopped raving about it so when she told me she’d saved me a spot, I was excited! It also sounded like the perfect opportunity to connect with fellow readers, relax, and bunker down with a new book.

What is your favorite book·cation memory?

Definitely bunkering down in the coziest couch in my jammies with a blanket and snacks. We had our YouTube ambiance playing in the background and just getting to turn off my phone and lock in and focus on reading. I definitely encourage everyone to attend; it’s so nice to get away from your crazy, hectic life and get to be cozy all weekend with your fellow book lovers and just relax and read!

Describe book·cation in 5 words:

Cozy, relaxing, competitive (because I wanted to finish Onyx Storm before my sister), decompressing, and yummy because there were so many yummy snacks and meals!

What’s your unpopular book opinion?

I don’t know if this is unpopular, but I hate love triangles and miscommunication tropes as the main plot point. I’m fine if it’s in a couple chapters, but if it’s the whole book it drives me insane!

If you’re into yummy snacks, cozy spots, and being around people who also love reading, then book·cation is the weekend for you! Join us at our next reading retreat and fill your cup with time for yourself and time for community, you deserve it friend!
